A seminar titled “Effective Use of Biological Insecticides in Combatting Pest Insects” held at Near East University addressed the use of biological insecticides in combating invasive pests that have been damaging forests and agricultural products in recent years in Northern Cyprus.

Organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture at Near East University and the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the seminar was led by Prof. Dr. Ataç Uzel, an expert in Basic and Industrial Microbiology at the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science at Ege University.

In attendance were Hüseyin Çavuş, the Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Olgun Amcaoğlu, the Minister of Economy and Energy, alongside Dr. Reşat Değirmenci, Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and İpek Kızılduman, Director of the General Agricultural Insurance Fund. Also present were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Tüzünkan, Vice Rector of Near East University, and Prof. Dr. Özge Özden, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Near East University. Prof. Dr. Ataç Uzel emphasized the effects of the methods used in combating pests during the seminar, highlighting the damages caused by chemical methods. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining agricultural areas sustainably in the face of increasing population, pointing out that chemical applications pose significant obstacles to creating a sustainable environment due to their environmental damages, incorrect targeting, decreased biodiversity, resistance development, and accumulation of toxic substances.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Tüzünkan stressed the importance of a scientific approach in combating pests, stating that the seminar aimed to offer a different perspective on combating pests such as pine processionary moths and other invasive pests and the damage they cause to the ecosystem.

The seminar aimed to shed light on the importance of adopting environmentally friendly methods in pest control, promoting sustainable agriculture practices while preserving biodiversity and minimizing environmental impact.
