The Near East University Gender Research and Application Center (TOCAM) organized a multidisciplinary educational program for female inmates at the TRNC Central Prison in Haspolat. Held under the slogan “Let’s Think Together, Let’s Learn Together,” the program brought together 25 women inmates and academic staff from Near East University for training sessions in psychology, health, and art. As part of the program, Prof. Dr. Özen Aşut from the Faculty of Medicine delivered a presentation titled “Health Protective Measures in Closed Environments,” focusing on basic public health awareness. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tijen Zeybek from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences shared practical insights on “Emotional Balance and Coping with Stress.”
In addition, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Miralay, Head of the Art and Crafts Teaching Department at the Atatürk Faculty of Education, conducted a two-week Art Therapy Workshop for Women, offering participants a creative and transformative experience. The event also featured interactive question-and-answer sessions, encouraging active participation and dialogue. Assoc. Prof. Ayça Demet Atay, Head of the Gender Research and Application Center at Near East University, stated that the center aims to carry out projects that directly contribute to society. Emphasizing the social responsibility of academia, Atay said, “We academics do not sit in ivory towers. We are part of life, and through our work, we touch lives.” She underlined that TOCAM gives particular importance to projects focusing on vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.
