Collaborative Breakthrough: Near East University and Istanbul University to Develop Diagnostic Kit for Rare Childhood Diseases

The collaborative effort between Near East University and Istanbul University to develop a medical diagnostic kit for detecting genetic causes of rare metabolic diseases in children aligns with the global initiative to improve health outcomes and address public health challenges.

The project, supported by the Istanbul University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit Research Universities Support Program, aims to tackle the significant issues posed by hereditary metabolic rare diseases, contributing to global and national public health concerns.

The diagnostic kit, to be produced as a result of this joint initiative, focuses on newborn screenings, emphasizing the critical role of early detection in preventing irreversible damage, particularly mental and developmental retardation. Early diagnosis facilitated by the developed kit is expected to enable timely intervention, preventing organ damage, especially in the brain, and ultimately reducing disability and premature death.

The significance of newborn screenings in identifying rare diseases is highlighted, acknowledging the importance of such screenings as a vital component of public health initiatives. The project also underscores the potential for international collaboration, as the diagnostic kit's development is framed as contributing to cooperation between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Turkey in the health sector.

The emphasis on commercialization strategies to bring the developed kit to the health sector demonstrates a commitment to creating sustainable solutions beyond the research phase. Near East University Rector, Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, highlights their intention to utilize various commercialization strategies.

In conclusion, the joint effort by Near East University and Istanbul University in developing a diagnostic kit for rare metabolic diseases in children not only addresses a critical health issue but also reflects a commitment to advancing sustainable development through research, innovation, and international collaboration in the field of health.
