A study led by researchers Ukabi and Akçay from Department of Architecture, Near East University delved into the implications of design approaches on the historical identity layers of the North Nicosia Walled City, spanning the period from 1983 to 2003. The investigation focused on understanding how architectural design strategies could incorporate contemporary elements into this historically rich city while conserving its unique identity. Employing a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study analyzed three case studies of buildings erected during the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus era.

The findings underscored the delicate balance between regulatory guidelines and design approaches, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the preservation of monuments’ character and historic values over demolition when adding new layers to existing ones. However, the study revealed a tendency among designers to focus solely on nostalgia rather than embracing the city’s heterogeneous character, resulting in a lack of diversity in design approaches.

Furthermore, the study highlighted the negative impact of imitation approaches on the city’s historical identity, emphasizing the need for forward-thinking design approaches that integrate contemporary elements while respecting the city’s rich historical context. Drawing inspiration from the past should not entail mere replication but rather reinterpretation in a way that reflects the values and aspirations of the present.

The study emphasized the importance of considering the contextual nature of design approaches and their implications for historical identity. Positive outcomes stem from interventions that ensure continuity in historical sequence layers, while negative consequences arise from approaches that prioritize replication over innovation. By adopting inclusive design strategies that honor the city’s heritage while embracing contemporary influences, the North Nicosia Walled City can evolve sustainably while preserving its historical significance for future generations.
