The project, motivated by the recent surge in oil and natural gas exploration in the Mediterranean, aims to conduct a comprehensive examination of the region’s geological formations. This research has provided valuable insights into the geological structure of Cyprus, particularly the origins, evolution, and potential economic significance of its evaporite formations.
A key focus of the project has been the investigation of the Messinian Salinity Crisis and the characterization of the upper evaporites (gypsum) in Northern Cyprus. Three doctoral students, two of whom are based in Northern Cyprus, are actively contributing to this research.
Recently, a delegation of scientists from Europe visited Near East University as part of the field studies for the project. The delegation, led by Professor Luis Gibert, was welcomed by Near East University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt. Professor Gibert praised the significant evaporite formations in Northern Cyprus and expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations, including the possibility of a new project and workshop with Near East University. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt emphasized the university’s strong commitment to supporting these important studies, which hold significant implications for both scientific understanding and economic development in the region.
