Disability Rights Monitoring Workshop 2025

The Disability Rights Monitoring Workshop was organized through the collaboration of the Near East University Center for Community Research and Development, the Disability Rights Monitoring Committee, and the Nicosia Turkish Municipality on 5 December 2025 at the Nicosia Solidarity and Education Center. The event brought together representatives from the Nicosia Turkish Municipality Disability Unit, the Cyprus Hearing and Speech Impaired Foundation, the Cyprus Turkish Disabled Sports Federation, the Cyprus Turkish Orthopedic Disabled Association, along with academic experts and civil society stakeholders.

Discussions under the theme of Current Situation and Awareness focused on existing legal regulations concerning disability rights, public awareness levels, and accessibility of public services. Sessions on Education and Access addressed barriers to education, inclusive education practices, and the physical and digital accessibility of educational institutions. Health and Rehabilitation panels examined obstacles to healthcare access, the inclusivity of rehabilitation services, and emergency healthcare regulations. Employment and Economic Participation explored structural barriers to employment, employer awareness and motivation, and support mechanisms for disabled entrepreneurs.

The Accessibility sessions evaluated challenges related to physical environments, digital services, and transportation systems. Panels on Women, Children, and Multiple Discrimination highlighted the discrimination faced by disabled women, caregivers, and children, as well as intersectional disadvantages. Under the Rights-Based Approach and Monitoring theme, participants discussed public accountability mechanisms, monitoring systems, and the role of NGOs.

The workshop was moderated by Prof. Dr. Fahriye Altınay and Assoc. Prof. Dervişe Amca Toklu, with outcome recommendations presented by Prof. Dr. Mukaddes Sakallı Demirok under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay. The event concluded with stakeholder commitments to collaboration, supported by a solidarity gathering at Yeni Dünya 1+ Café, promoting inclusion and community engagement.
