Renowned expert Prof. Dr. Sühendan Ekmekçioğlu from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center delivered a compelling conference on immunotherapy, an innovative cancer treatment method, as part of the “Periodic Conferences” series organized by the DESAM Research Institute at Near East University. The focus of the conference was on immunotherapy’s application to skin cancer, particularly melanoma, with an examination of the relationship between skin cancer and surrounding cells based on patient samples.

The event, attended by Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, drew a substantial audience of academics and students. Prof. Dr. Ekmekçioğlu shed light on “The Role of the Tumor Immune Microenvironment in Cancer,” highlighting the evolution of immune therapy treatments since 2018 and their prominence in cancer treatment.

Distinguishing normal skin masses from melanoma cells, Prof. Dr. Ekmekçioğlu underscored the significance of understanding the interaction between the tumor region and surrounding tissues. The presentation focused on numerous studies exploring this interaction, emphasizing the toxic response of tumors to immune treatments.

Discussing recent extensive research on immune responses in a large group, Prof. Dr. Ekmekçioğlu shared insights into ongoing studies focusing on skin cancer groups. She elaborated on investigating the impact of the tumor environment, emphasizing that many studies are still in the discovery phase. The digital environment allows researchers to pinpoint specific cells within the tumor for further analysis.

The research has revealed the critical importance of the tumor’s immune microenvironment structure. Prof. Dr. Ekmekçioğlu stated, “Examining this structure allows us to derive more detailed and solution-oriented results. The interplay between tissues significantly influences the disease’s progression.”

The conference concluded with Prof. Dr. Ekmekçioğlu engaging in a Q&A session, providing further insights into the groundbreaking research and its potential implications for cancer treatment.
