Exploring Cyprus’s Aromatic Plants

“Aromatic Plants of Cyprus,” organized by the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Landscape Architecture, to highlight the island’s unique plant diversity and the scientific, medical, cosmetic, and economic potential of its aromatic flora. Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer, Director of the Graduate School and Head of Pharmacognosy at the Faculty of Pharmacy, presented research on the scientific value of essential oils found in Cyprus’s endemic plants. He emphasized that the island, home to over 1,610 native plant species—108 of which are endemic—stands out as an important center for pharmaceutical and aromatic plants. Prof. Başer underlined the need for conservation and sustainable use of these natural resources, noting their wide application in medicine, cosmetics, and food industries.
