Fostering Sustainable Values: Near East University’s Tale of Transformation

Near East University Atatürk Faculty of Education recently celebrated the culmination of its fairy tale writing competition on "Values in Tales," showcasing a profound commitment to integrating sustainable values into education. The competition, aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), featured 28 original works that sought to promote values essential for a sustainable and equitable future.

Under the insightful coordination of Assist. Prof. Dr. Şebnem Güldal Kan and Seçil Besim Ayhan, the event unfolded within the framework of "Character and Values Education" and "Tales" courses, underscoring the university's dedication to nurturing socially responsible individuals. The expertly selected jury, composed of representatives from the TRNC Ministry of National Education and distinguished education specialists, meticulously assessed the submissions, emphasizing the importance of instilling values crucial for achieving SDGs.

 

The awards ceremony, held at the prestigious Near East University Grand Library, served as a beacon for the transformative power of education in fostering values aligned with sustainable development. The winning fairy tale, "Milo’s Special Friends," penned by Feride Şahbaz and Fatma Arslan, exemplified the competition's success in illuminating themes vital for a sustainable and harmonious society.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yağmur Çerkez, Acting Dean of the Atatürk Education Faculty, delivered an inspiring speech during the ceremony, emphasizing the pivotal role of fairy tales in shaping values such as justice, compassion, and benevolence. Her remarks underscored the profound impact that educational initiatives like this competition can have in contributing to a generation well-versed in the principles and ideals encapsulated by the SDGs.

As the ceremony unfolded, it became evident that the competition was about recognizing outstanding literary works and nurturing a values-based educational approach that aligns with the global pursuit of sustainable development. The commendation extended to all participating students reinforced the idea that education, when infused with a commitment to SDGs, becomes a powerful catalyst for positive change.
