Hidden Lepidoptera Diversity of Cyprus Through Genetic Research
A scientific study on the diversity of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) in Cyprus has been published as the cover article in Insects journal, co-authored by Prof. Dr. Özge Özden, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Near East University, the research provides comprehensive evidence that Cyprus hosts a far richer Lepidoptera fauna than previously known.
Using modern genetic methods, the study confirmed 1,213 species across the island, including more than 100 species newly recorded for Cyprus, 10 species documented for the first time in Europe, and several endemic species unique to the island. Conducted by an international team of scientists from six countries, the study highlights Cyprus’s critical role as a biodiversity bridge between Europe, Asia, and Africa.
