Interdisciplinary Community Service Workshop Brings Together NGOs and Academics

Near East University Social Research and Development Center, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education, organized the “Interdisciplinary Community Service Workshop,” which saw significant participation from NGO representatives, academics, and students.

Invited speakers included Ruşen Yücesoylu Karakaya, President of the Champion Angels Association, and Bahire Çoşkuner Doğru, President of the Cyprus Hearing and Speech Impaired Foundation. Both speakers emphasized the importance of community service and shared their experiences within their respective fields. Their presentations highlighted various aspects of community service projects and underscored the need to increase such initiatives.

The workshop featured eight sessions, addressing a range of topics aimed at solving social issues and improving the quality of life for various community segments. Associate Professor Fatoş Miralay presented on “Art Education for Special Needs Individuals – Learning Through Art,” while Associate Professor Fatma Köprülü discussed “Learning to Live with Earthquakes.” Dr. Neriman Soykunt introduced the “Introducing Musical Instruments Project,” targeting Zümrütköy Primary School and Alayköy Primary School, along with the “Greening the Nature Project” at Alayköy Primary School.

A short film called “Bamboo” about hearing and speech impaired people was also screened at the workshop. After the film screening, the film was assessed by Atakan Bayraktaroğlu from Famagusta Special Education and Job Training School and Dr. Emirali Evcimen together with the participants

At the workshop, the names of the students, teachers and parents who lost their lives at Isias Hotel on February 6 were read one by one. Also in the workshop, Near East University Atatürk Faculty of Education students presented their own hand-printed banner with the words ‘Champion Angels’ to Ruşen Yücesoylu Karakaya, President of the Association of Keeping Champion Angels Alive.

Other notable presentations included Associate Professor İpek Danju’s “Environmental Education – Tree Planting Event” and Associate Professor Yasemin Sorakın’s “Visit to the Child Protection Agency” and “Playing Colorful Games.” Additionally, Associate Professor Didem İşlek covered “Creating Environmental Awareness in Primary School” and “PET Shortage Awareness,” while Specialist Ayşe Öztoprak presented “Happy Children: Unforgettable Children’s Day,” and Associate Professor Özay Önoral discussed “Fun School Yard.”
