“Laughing in Afghanistan” met with the audience at Near East University

Near East University’s Faculty of Communication hosted a screening of Laughing in Afghanistan, a documentary directed by Greek filmmaker Anneta Papathanassiou. The film portrays the life of Karim Asir, known as Afghanistan’s “Charlie Chaplin,” who uses art to resist oppression despite the challenges in his conflict-torn country.

The event, organized in collaboration with the Department of Film Production and Broadcasting and the Department of Journalism, took place at the Accessible Cinema Hall and drew a large audience of journalism students. Following the screening, a discussion highlighted the resilience of Afghan artists and the obstacles they face under Taliban rule, including censorship and death threats.

Director Papathanassiou emphasized the importance of showcasing Afghanistan’s artistic side, often overshadowed by conflict. She shared her commitment to human rights and plans for future works addressing global struggles.
