Lefkara Embroidery Workshop by Near East University and HASDER

Near East University’s Atatürk Faculty of Education, in collaboration with HASDER Handicrafts Center, launched a meaningful cultural project to promote Cypriot heritage. As part of SDG 11.2.6, the Lefkara Embroidery Workshop was held from December 21 to 28, 2024, aiming to introduce the traditional Cypriot craft to participants.

The workshop took place at the HASDER building, with ten students from the Departments of Art Education and Social Studies Education participating. Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Miralay and Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Danju, with guidance from Aysel Kuburlu, the students learned the intricate techniques of traditional Lefkara embroidery. This artistic process, requiring patience and craftsmanship, allowed students to explore the cultural richness of Cyprus while expressing their own creativity.

At the closing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Umut Akcıl, Dean of the Atatürk Faculty of Education, presented certificates to the participants. He emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Cypriot culture and highlighted how such extracurricular learning experiences provide unique opportunities for students. Prof. Dr. Akcıl also thanked the instructors and HASDER Handicrafts Center for their contributions.
