Morale-Boosting Event for Earthquake Survivors Marks International Women's Day

In a heartwarming initiative, the Near East University and the Social Services Department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security joined hands to organize a special morale event for female survivors of the devastating earthquake that struck Kahramanmaraş in Turkey on February 6. The earthquake left 11 cities in ruins, rendering hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Seeking solace, many survivors found refuge with relatives in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

On the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8, a meaningful event unfolded at the training workshop of the Near East University Vocational School Hair Care and Beauty Services Department on campus. Over 20 women, directly affected by the earthquake, were treated to a day of rejuvenation, receiving haircuts, dyes, blow dryers, manicures, permanent nail polish, eyebrow removal, and skin care services.

The event was graced by the presence of Hasan Taçoy, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, who actively participated in the proceedings. Notably, Minister Taçoy not only attended to the needs of the women but also engaged with their children, creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere.

Speaking about the initiative, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yeşim Üstün Aksoy, Head of the Near East University Vocational School Hair Care and Beauty Services Department, emphasized the significance of reaching out to those affected by the earthquake. She stated, "This year, on March 8, International Women’s Day, we organized an event for our earthquake survivors. We wanted to be with our earthquake survivors and make them smile a little."

Highlighting the commitment to women's well-being, Dr. Aksoy mentioned that free hair care and beauty treatments are an annual tradition on International Women’s Day. This year, the focus was on providing a morale-boosting experience for the brave survivors who have faced the aftermath of the earthquake. The event not only brought smiles to the faces of the participants but also reflected a step towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to health and well-being, gender equality, and partnerships for the goals.
