Multicultural Medical Internship: Global Students Explore Healthcare and Culture in Northern Cyprus

The Medical Students Association of Northern Cyprus (MSANC), under the auspices of the Near East University Dean of Students Office, recently hosted 50 medical students from 13 countries through the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA). These students, hailing from Italy, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Russia, Brazil, Slovakia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Hungary, Mexico, Czech Republic, Ireland, and Argentina, participated in a two-month internship at the clinical departments of the Near East University Hospital in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The internship provided them with valuable practical medical experience.

In addition to their clinical exposure, the visiting students had the opportunity to explore the TRNC’s cultural heritage by visiting historical sites in various cities. The program included visits to Kyrenia, Famagusta, Nicosia, Güzelyurt, and İskele, enabling them to experience Turkish Cypriot traditions, dances, and cuisine through cultural events.

Prof. Dr. Dudu Özkum Yavuz, representing the Near East University Dean of Student Office, expressed satisfaction in welcoming medical students from diverse cultural backgrounds. She highlighted the university’s multicultural identity, boasting students from 143 countries, and pledged ongoing support for international initiatives like those led by the Northern Cyprus Medical Students Association.

Sara Darweesh, President of MSANC, acknowledged the impactful experiences gained by international medical students during their time at TRNC. She expressed gratitude for the support and deemed the exchange program one of the best within IFMSA.
