Date Added: 29 December 2023, 11:10

Aiming to address the growing prevalence of diabetes in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the Near East University DESAM Research Institute and the Turkish Cypriot Diabetes Association have entered into a significant cooperation protocol. The protocol, effective with the signatures of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cenk Serhan Ă–zverel, Director of the Near East University DESAM Research Institute, and Taner Moris, President of the Turkish Cypriot Diabetes Association, seeks to raise awareness about diabetes through scientific research and educational initiatives.

The TRNC Ministry of Health’s “Hypertension, Diabetes, and Kidney Diseases Screening” revealed that 34.4 percent of participants from 2022 to 2023 had diabetes, underscoring the urgency of addressing this metabolic disorder. Factors such as genetic predisposition, sedentary lifestyles, and obesity contribute to the rising prevalence of diabetes.

Under this collaboration, the partners plan to organize training sessions and social events for diabetic patients and their families. The overarching goal is to offer solutions to challenges faced by diabetic individuals in the TRNC, prevent new cases through heightened public awareness, and contribute to overall public health improvement. The joint efforts will include scientific studies, educational programs, and initiatives to enhance social awareness about diabetes, aligning with a holistic approach to combat this health issue in the region.
