Near East University and University of Kyrenia Collaborate to Support Local Communities for Sustainable Development Goals

As part of the 4th Social Research and Development Symposium organized by the Social Research and Development Center in collaboration with Near East University and University of Kyrenia, a panel was held to address key policy development processes for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The panel discussed strategies to involve local communities in sustainable development policies and strengthen cooperation with relevant ministries.

Moderated by Prof. Dr. Sevcan Kurtulmuş Yılmaz and Prof. Dr. Fezile Özdamlı from the Near East University Sustainability Office, the panel featured a diverse range of participants. Representing the TRNC Presidency, Ahmet Akdeniz; from the Ministry of Labor, Alev Ecevit; and other notable speakers, including Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Uzunboylu, who discussed the role of higher education in SDGs, and Uz. Murat Cem Acaralp, who addressed educational research aspects, contributed to the discussions.

The panel examined challenges and obstacles in policy development processes related to SDGs by institutions such as the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labor. Topics such as the development of policies and strategies, monitoring and reporting practices, and creating a viable governance infrastructure were also on the agenda.

The strong collaboration between Near East University and local communities was highlighted, emphasizing the need for strategic solutions encompassing education and the business world. The outcomes of the panel underscored the university’s active role in guiding local communities and contributing to social development.
