NEU Near East University marked a historic achievement at TEKNOFEST TRNC 2025 by winning two prestigious awards, becoming the only university in Cyprus to reach the podium. Competing with five projects developed entirely on its own campus, Near East University stood out among 15,750 teams and 47,865 participants. Held at the Old Ercan Airport from May 1–4, TEKNOFEST saw only 268 teams make it to the finals, with 20 representing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Near East University led the way with four projects, while Near East College participated with one, making up nearly one-third of Cyprus’ total finalists.

NEU’s Heavy Metal team won first place in the Agriculture Category of the Research Project Competition. Supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süleyman Aşır, the team developed a portable sensor system that detects heavy metals such as lead in agricultural areas, providing instant soil and water analysis. This innovation supports both agricultural productivity and environmental safety.

In the Environment and Energy Category, the EcOceanX team received the prestigious Best Presentation Award. Under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selin Deliceırmak, the project focused on collecting marine litter and converting it into reusable energy and materials, while also preserving marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems.
