Near East University Empowers Mothers: Literacy Program Graduates Receive Certificates

The Near East University recently concluded a six-month literacy program designed for illiterate mothers of children in the Child Protection Department. At a ceremony held within the department, 15 mothers successfully completing the program received certificates of achievement, marking a transformative journey towards literacy.

Faculty members and students from the Turkish Language Teaching Department at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences facilitated the courses, heralding profound changes in the lives of these mothers. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Gökbulut, Deputy Head of Turkish Language Teaching Department at Near East University, highlighted how literacy empowered mothers, enabling them to engage more effectively in their children's education. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yeniasır, Head of Turkish Language Teaching Department, observed substantial positive changes in the mothers' daily lives post-literacy training, affirming the program's continuation for the next year.

Asenur Köleoğlu and Ece Naz Sevim, students from the Turkish Language Teaching Department, along with Şengül Yorgancıoğlu, Education Coordinator of the Child Protection Department, expressed pride in contributing to the mothers' lives and witnessing their enthusiasm throughout the program.

During the ceremony, the graduated mothers expressed how learning to read and write had significantly boosted their self-confidence. They shared touching anecdotes, expressing joy in newfound abilities such as reading signs, writing their names, and handling daily tasks independently. Fehime Bayhan emphasized the immense happiness in now being able to sign her name, whereas Fidan Akat rejoiced in newfound independence in conducting daily business. Sultan Değer shared her satisfaction in being able to read documents herself, enhancing her personal and professional life. Emine Altan and Semira Yumuşak voiced their desires for continuous learning to further support their children's education and newfound ability to comprehend written materials with curiosity and enthusiasm. The transformative impact of literacy was palpable in their stories, underscoring the program's immense significance in their lives.
