Near East University Hosts Symposium on Marine Engineering

Near East University organized the “Marine Engineering: From Routine to Crisis” symposium in collaboration with its Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Technology Transfer Office (NERITA). The event featured experts from Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, a leading U.S.-based engineering firm, and attracted a large audience.

Moderated by Prof. Dr. Murat Özgören, the symposium focused on coastal and port engineering advancements. Senior Engineer Allison C. DiGregorio discussed “Coastal Structure Engineering Evaluations,” highlighting climate change impacts, rising sea levels, and seismic risks. She emphasized sustainable solutions like deep soil mixture (DSM) and piled quay designs to enhance durability.

In the second session, Senior Engineer Dolunay Öniz presented findings from the February 2023 earthquakes in southeastern Turkey. She observed significant soil liquefaction, settlements, and structural deformations but noted that piled structures remained largely resilient. Öniz also highlighted the critical role of ports in post-disaster logistics and the rapid repair efforts.

The symposium concluded with a Q&A session, followed by Near East University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Umut Aksoy presenting certificates of appreciation to the speakers. The event underscored the importance of sustainable marine engineering solutions in addressing future challenges.
