Near East University Researchers Contribute to Türkiye’s Comprehensive Study on Drug-Resistant Fungus

Researchers from Near East University, Gazi University, and Bilkent University have completed Türkiye’s most comprehensive study on Candida auris, a fungus identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “critical priority pathogen” due to its role in hospital-acquired infections. The project, led by Prof. Dr. Ayşe Kalkancı from Gazi University, revealed alarming findings about the pathogen’s resilience and resistance patterns.

By analyzing 47 Candida auris isolates collected from medical centers across Türkiye, the team found that 95% of the strains demonstrated strong biofilm-forming abilities, allowing the fungus to cling to medical equipment and resist treatment. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Seyer from the Near East University Experimental Health Sciences Research Institute reported that 31% of the strains were resistant to fluconazole, a common antifungal drug.
