Near East University Transforms Post-Birth Care with Innovative Umbilical Cord Clamp

Near East University researchers have developed an umbilical cord clamp, significantly enhancing the traditional design dating back to the 1960s. This newly designed clamp, a collaborative effort between the Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Midwifery and the NEU3D Laboratory, represents a significant leap forward in ergonomics, catering to the preferences of both parents and healthcare professionals.

The umbilical cord serves as a vital link, enabling the fetus to receive nutrients and oxygen from the placenta during pregnancy. Upon birth, it’s clamped about 2-3 centimeters above the abdomen and separated from the placenta. However, the conventional cord clamps, while functional, have often presented challenges for parents and healthcare workers due to their considerable size. Their bulkiness has led to difficulties in dressing and undressing newborns, sometimes causing discomfort and stress to both parents and infants.

In response to these challenges, Near East University researchers embarked on designing a more ergonomic and user-friendly cord clamp. The collaborative effort involved Assist. Prof. Dr. Betül Mammadov from the Midwifery Department, Assoc. Prof. Emil Mammadov from the Pediatric Surgery Department at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, and mechanical engineer Ersin Aytaç from the NEU3D Laboratory. Their innovation, a smaller-sized and more user-friendly cord clamp, has been recognized and registered as a “Utility Model” by the Turkish Patent Institute, ensuring protection for its inventive features.

This clamp’s novel design aims to alleviate the challenges associated with traditional clamps, offering a more comfortable and stress-free experience for parents, newborns, and healthcare professionals involved in the post-birth procedure. The accomplishment marks another milestone for Near East University’s commitment to advancing healthcare through innovative research and product development. Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ emphasized the institution’s dedication to bridging academic knowledge with practical applications in health sciences and engineering. Assist. Prof. Dr. Betül Mammadov underlined the significant ergonomic improvements in the new clamp, anticipating its positive impact on easing post-birth procedures and enhancing comfort for all involved parties.
