At the 38th ANKEM Rational Antibiotic Use Congress organized by the Antibiotic and Chemotherapy Association (ANKEM) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), experts discussed scientific studies that could enhance the effectiveness of antibiotics or create new alternatives, addressing the growing threat of antibiotic resistance due to widespread and indiscriminate use.

The four-day congress, featuring speeches by President Ersin Tatar and Yakın Doğu University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ at the opening, showcased the participation of Yakın Doğu University researchers. The team presented 17 studies, earning them the First Prize for Oral Presentation, Third Prize for Oral Presentation, and First Prize for Poster Presentation.

One of the awarded studies, titled “Development of COVID-19, Influenza, and RSV Multiplex RT-qPCR Diagnosis Kit for Fighting the Triple Pandemic After the Pandemic,” led by Doç. Dr. Buket Baddal, Dr. Gülten Tuncel, Dr. Gökçe Akan, Uzm. Ayşegül Bostancı, and Uzm. Melis Kalaycı from Yakın Doğu University Kit Production Laboratory, along with the signature of Yakın Doğu University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, secured the “First Prize for Oral Presentation.”

Another distinguished work, “In vitro Anti-Trichomonas vaginalis Activity of Origanum majorana Essential Oil and Its Synergy with Metronidazole,” authored by Yrd. Doç. Dr. Emrah Güler, Dr. Yener Özel, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ünlü, Uzm. İbrahim Çavuş, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özbilgin, Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer, and Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, received the “Third Prize for Oral Presentation.”

Additionally, the study titled “Investigating the Molecular Mechanism of Antibiotic Resistance Spread and Exploring New Bacteriophages as an Alternative Treatment Approach in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains” presented by Yakın Doğu University researchers, including Rektor Tamer Şanlıdağ, Dr. Gökçe Akan, Dr. Gülten Tuncel, Prof. Dr. Murat Sayan, Ferdiye Taner, Vaheesan Rajabal, Steve Petrovovski, and Doruk Kaynarca, earned the “First Prize for Poster Presentation.”
