October Cancer Awareness: Training Sessions on Breast Cancer Prevention

Breast cancer remains the most common type of cancer among women worldwide and in Turkey. It occurs when cells in the breast tissue grow uncontrollably. According to the World Health Organization’s 2021 report, breast cancer ranks first among newly diagnosed cancers, accounting for 11.7% of all cases. In Turkey, the Ministry of Health’s data reflects a similar trend, with a total of 760 people diagnosed with breast cancer between 2012 and 2018, including 740 women and 20 men.

October is globally recognized as “Cancer Awareness Month,” and in line with this, the Department of Midwifery at Near East University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Yarıcı, has been conducting “Breast Cancer Awareness Training” in collaboration with the Cancer Patients Assistance Association. This October, the training sessions were held at schools and institutions, including Doğa College, Atatürk Vocational High School, Değirmenlik High School, and Metgin Ltd.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yarıcı emphasized the importance of early detection, stating that identifying the disease in its early stages positively impacts both recovery and the quality of life. She also provided valuable information on how to perform monthly breast self-examinations and their significance in early diagnosis. These awareness efforts aim to educate and empower individuals to take proactive steps in breast cancer prevention and detection.
