Near East University hosted Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy, President of TÜBİTAK MAM, member of the Presidential Board of Local Government and Disaster Policies, and widely known as the Polar Explorer, for a seminar focusing on climate change and the rapidly transforming polar regions. The event, titled “Poles and Climate Change” was organized in collaboration with the Near East University Center of Excellence and the Near East Research Innovation and Technology Area (NERITA) and attracted strong participation. Held at the Irfan Günsel Congress Center and moderated by Prof. Dr. Murat Özgören, President of the Center of Excellence, the seminar featured insights from Prof. Dr. Özsoy’s 18 scientific expeditions to the poles. She emphasized that nearly 40 percent of glaciers have melted, underlining the accelerating impacts of the global climate crisis. Prof. Dr. Özsoy also addressed Turkey’s strategic goals in polar science, including scientific excellence, international collaboration, public engagement, and the sustainability of national polar research.
