The “Beekeeping and Technology” seminar held at Near East University addressed innovative technological solutions aimed at enhancing efficiency in honey production. In collaboration with the Italian Sustainable Plant Protection Institute, Near East University’s Faculty of Agriculture brought together beekeepers from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to discuss advancements in technology for the benefit of the native bee race of Cyprus.
The seminar, organized in conjunction with the Northern Cyprus Beekeepers Association and attended by key figures like Emin Bahçıvan and Hasan Kozok, Founding President and President of the Northern Cyprus Beekeepers Association, respectively, highlighted the importance of technology in beekeeping. Near East University Faculty of Agriculture’s Prof. Dr. Özge Özden, Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel, and Dr. İlker Gelişen presented insights, and Prof. Dr. Fadi Al-Turjman from the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Institute shared perspectives on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in increasing productivity.
A notable presentation by Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Gelişen focused on “Hive Monitoring Systems,” emphasizing the significance of monitoring beehives. Gelişen explained their efforts to determine how monitoring factors such as movement, stress, sound, temperature, and humidity in beehives can impact honey production. He stated, “Our goal is to enhance productivity by creating a beehive tracking system with the support of artificial intelligence.” This system aims to provide optimal conditions for honey production by utilizing AI to monitor and analyze beehive activities.
