Workshop on “Affordable Housing Design for North Cyprus” by Near East University
Near East University remains committed to supporting sustainable urban development and community well-being in Northern Cyprus. As part of this mission, the Faculty of Architecture organized a workshop titled “Affordable Housing Design for North Cyprus” on December 12–13, 2024, focusing on accessibility, affordability, and sustainability in housing production.
This two-day workshop was held at the Near East University campus and brought together key stakeholders, including local government representatives, public institutions, professional bodies, academics, and students. The aim was to jointly explore strategies for affordable housing production, inclusive urban planning, and community-focused development policies.
Collaboration With Local Authorities and Public Institutions
The workshop was organized in cooperation with:
- Near East University Faculty of Architecture
- NEU Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Union of the Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) Chamber of Architects
- Housing Acquisition Unit, TRNC Ministry of Interior This broad and formal collaboration highlighted the University's role as an academic partner to local authorities and public bodies in developing and improving affordable housing policies for the region. During the event, it was officially announced that Near East University academics would voluntarily contribute to future municipal housing projects and policy-making initiatives.
Innovation and Practical Design Solutions
Participants—including municipal representatives, architects, and university experts—worked together to develop low-cost, environmentally friendly, and socially inclusive housing models suitable for the socio-economic context of Northern Cyprus. The resulting projects demonstrated innovative design strategies aimed at addressing community housing needs.
Advancing Sustainable and Inclusive Communities
The workshop emphasized that housing delivery requires a holistic approach integrating economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Through initiatives such as this, Near East University actively strengthens its partnerships with municipal and governmental authorities to support urban planning, affordable housing development, and the improvement of living standards for local residents.
