Fostering Female Excellence in STEM: Near East University Proactive Initiatives and Mentorship Programs

Concerns about women underrepresentation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions are of worldwide importance. Near East University addresses these challenges with special priority, and various initiatives are being implemented to assist. In 2022, 13% of the female graduates from Near EastUniversity obtained degrees in STEM fields, reflecting a gradual increase from previous years; however, the current percentage remains relatively low.

The increased female graduation rates in STEM subjects in recent years suggests that the university efforts are beginning to bear fruit. This accomplishment is particularly aided by mentorship initiatives geared at female candidates entering the university. The university promotion offices and student affairs divisions host experienced mentors as part of these activities.

The lower representation of female students in fields like computer science - mathematics, statistics, agriculture and forestry emphasizes the necessity for actively promoting and supporting women in these fields.

During the university preference phase, mentors provide extensive information to female candidates, specifically highlighting departments in STEM subjects and explaining the benefits that graduates in these fields can acquire. This seeks to assist female students in making educated judgments during this important period of preference and launching a successful academic career in STEM areas.

Mentors; responsibilities extend beyond the preference phase and continue throughout the student experience. Mentors provide academic guidance and help students overcome hurdles in STEM, form networks, and develop professions, all to increase the success of female STEM students. In collaboration with Near East College, the secondary education institution of Near East Enterprises, Near East University is furthering its commitment to gender equality by actively addressing the underrepresentation of female students in STEM fields. Aligned with this vision, we offer specialized counseling services tailored to women who may not traditionally consider STEM disciplines for their academic pursuits. Through these guidance initiatives, our goal is to empower and support female students in making informed choices about pursuing careers in STEM, fostering inclusivity, and breaking down barriers that may exist in these fields. Our dedicated counseling services in STEM areas are in line with our overarching mission to ensure that all students, irrespective of gender, have equal opportunities and support to explore and excel in fields that align with their aspirations. This collaborative effort with Near East College reflects our commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse educational environment, where everyone has the resources and encouragement to thrive in their chosen academic and professional paths.

Significant Training Held to Illuminate the Role of Women in Politics
On March 8, 2022, a 3-hour training session organized by Prof. Dr. Nur Köprülü, a faculty member in the Department of Political Science, aimed to empower women in politics and inspire university students through mentorship. Female students who participated in the training under the framework of mentorship and guidance gained insights from Prof. Dr. Köprülü's experiences, learning effective ways to be more involved in politics. Prof. Dr. Köprülü focused on the history and achievements of women in politics and provided practical strategies for individual development, serving as a mentor to the students. The event also encouraged the formation of a solidarity and support network among the students.
