Sustainable Learning Sparks Joy: Reading Festival at Near East University

Students from the Atatürk Faculty of Education at Near East University provided enjoyable moments for primary school students at Near East Primary School with their “reading festival,” incorporating sustainability principles. Coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Köprülü, Deputy Head of the Department of Classroom Teaching at the Atatürk Faculty of Education, the event aimed not only to entertain children but also to create a platform for sustainable learning habits.

From a sustainability perspective, the materials used in the event were recyclable, emphasizing the importance of informing children about the preservation of natural resources. Furthermore, the highlighted habit of reading books was underlined not only as an individual’s developmental tool but also as a sustainable approach for the community’s long-term access to knowledge and cultural accumulation.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Köprülü stated that entertaining activities that spark curiosity in children lay the foundation for a sustainable education model. This model encourages children to perceive reading as not just a learning tool but also as an enjoyable and sustainable activity.

The reading festival not only benefited children but also provided university students, the future educators, with an opportunity to experience sustainable teaching methods, contributing to the adoption of a pedagogically sustainable education approach.
