Symposium on “A Vital Solution to Climate Issues: Midwives” Held at Near East University


A symposium titled “A Vital Solution to Climate Issues: Midwives” was held on May 3, 2024, at the Irfan Günsel Conference Center, Salon 1, organized by the Department of Midwifery at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Near East University. The event attracted significant participation and interest, addressing global warming, the impact of the climate crisis on pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal care, as well as postpartum consequences.

The symposium began with an opening speech by the Chair of the Midwifery Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Yarıcı. Keynote speaker Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu Avcıbay Vurgeç from Çukurova University discussed the importance of taking necessary precautions regarding climate issues and highlighted midwives’ unique role in providing healthy, sustainable care for women and children, who represent more than half of the population.

The event included discussions on topics such as “The Impact of Climate Change on Pregnancy and Birth,” “Maternity and Women’s Health Indicators in the TRNC,” and “Midwifery, Legal Regulations, and Challenges in the TRNC.” The symposium concluded with a role-play performance by final-year midwifery students on “Family Planning.”

Following the event, a NST course was conducted for students by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu Avcıbay Vurgeç, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Yarıcı, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Betül Mammadov.
