Renowned scholar Prof. Dr. Nevzat Kaya, hailing from Dokuz Eylul University's Faculty of Letters, Department of Comparative Literature, recently took center stage as the distinguished guest at the "Myths and Communication" seminar. Organized by the Near East University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Business Administration, the seminar delved into the profound influence of myths on social communication.
Moderated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Tijen Zeybek, a Faculty Member of the Near East University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, the event provided a platform for Prof. Dr. Nevzat Kaya to share insights on how myths, evolving into significant codes of social communication, have played a pivotal role in shaping cultures, beliefs, values, and lives. During his engaging discourse, Prof. Dr. Kaya emphasized the enduring relevance of myths, which are rooted in stories shaped by the beliefs of specific cultures or societies, and their continued significance as essential tools of social communication.
Highlighting the contemporary relevance of myths, Prof. Dr. Kaya discussed their current usage and the societal sections they impact. He remarked, "Through myths, we can say that a community builds the ability to take a thought into account by standardizing it for the first time."
In his profound analysis, Prof. Dr. Kaya underscored that myths, as old as human history, form the first socialization codes. Describing myths as the earliest form of mass media aimed at making sense of the world, he emphasized their value as stories based on the actions of gods or heroes, transmitted orally, and revered for the metaphors they carry. Prof. Dr. Kaya concluded by noting that myths and the narratives they create continue to shape individuals and societies, offering important clues about historical transformations.
The exploration of myths and their impact aligns with broader discussions surrounding cultural understanding, emphasizing the importance of such scholarly engagements in contributing to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to education, culture, and societal well-being.
