
In celebration of March 8th International Women’s Day, Near East University hosted the “Women and Society Symposium”, in collaboration with Dikmen Municipality. The symposium, organized by the Atatürk Faculty of Education, Preschool Teaching Department, and Social Research and Development Center, aimed to raise awareness about strengthening the role of women in social life.
The event was coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dervişe Amca Toklu, Vice Dean of the Atatürk Faculty of Education, and moderated by Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay and Prof. Dr. Fahriye Altınay. The symposium, which saw strong participation, featured opening speeches from Dikmen Mayor Yüksel Çelebi and Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay.

Throughout the symposium, a range of important topics were discussed by esteemed academics:Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dervişe Amca Toklu addressed “Women and Parenthood,” emphasizing shared parenting responsibility between men and women. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seçil Besim Ayhan spoke on “Women and Creativity,” highlighting creativity as an innate characteristic of women.Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şebnem Güldal Kan focused on “Women and Social Life,” discussing women’s contributions to both visible and invisible aspects of society.Expert Hulin Sıddık explored “Women and Gender Roles,” arguing that societal norms should not limit women’s identities.
The symposium concluded with Mayor Yüksel Çelebi presenting certificates of appreciation to the speakers, further reinforcing the message of gender equality and empowerment.
The event reinforced the idea that “a woman is a woman without being squeezed into any mold,” encouraging women to embrace their true selves beyond societal expectations.
