World Food Safety Day Event Highlights Dangers of Counterfeit Food

On June 7, World Food Safety Day, Near East University’s Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Food Engineering, organized an event titled “Imitation and Adulteration in Food” to address the pressing issue of counterfeit food products and their negative effects on health.

The event gathered a distinguished group of participants, including Ercan Akerzurumlu, Director of the Department of Agriculture, Beste Ōymen, President of the Chamber of Food Engineers, along with numerous faculty members, researchers, and students. Discussions covered a range of crucial topics such as the health impacts of fake food products, detection methods, the significance of quality control in the food industry, and the role of legal regulations and inspection processes.

Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Özge Özden, and Ercan Akerzurumlu delivered the opening speeches, setting the tone for the informative sessions that followed. Presentations were made by esteemed faculty members Prof. Dr. Nevzat Artık and Dr. Şebnem Güler from the Department of Food Engineering, as well as Dr. Mehmet Güler, President of the Adana Olive Production and Marketing Cooperative (ZEYKOOP).

In addition to addressing the scientific and regulatory aspects, the event also offered practical advice for consumers on making safe food choices and emphasized the importance of building trust between the food industry and consumers. The event concluded with a lively question-and-answer session.

Certificates of appreciation and handcrafted items made from cocoon were presented to the academics who contributed to the event, marking a successful and insightful gathering dedicated to enhancing food safety and combating food fraud.
