The "Women and Law Symposium," organized by the Faculty of Law at Near East University, took place on March 8, 2023, with a focus on sustainability. The event aimed to provide valuable insights into women's rights and legal issues within the framework of sustainability principles.
Session 1: The Historical and Social Position of Women
The first session of the symposium commenced with engaging presentations that examined the historical and social position of women from a sustainability perspective. Dr. Erkut Sivrikaya and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erçakıca discussed how the role of women within the family and society aligns with sustainable development goals throughout history. Dr. Ayten Erçoban focused on how constitutional law and constitutional justice can contribute to sustainable solutions in combating violence against women. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Alaslan evaluated women's abortion rights within the context of sustainability, emphasizing individual rights to body and health.
Session 2: Legal Framework and Women's Rights in the Workplace
The second session delved into the principle of sustainability within the legal framework and women's rights in the workplace. Lawyer Öncel Polili addressed the impact of gender discrimination in hiring on sustainable employment policies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayten Ordu analyzed the institution of marriage in the Turkish Civil Code from the perspective of gender equality and sustainability. Research Assistant Sıla Tatlıdil evaluated women's rights in legislation, emphasizing sustainable legal solutions based on decisions from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Beydola discussed the rights of disabled women in the workforce and the problems they face, exploring how sustainable and inclusive practices in the business world can provide solutions.
The event concluded with comprehensive discussions on sustainability and women's rights. Participants gained a better understanding of the importance of women's rights in building a sustainable society and had the opportunity to acquire information about ongoing efforts in this field.
