Near East University Patents Biosensor for Detecting Helicobacter pylori, Linked to Stomach Diseases and Cancer

The Near East University secured a patent for its biosensor designed to detect Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium linked to stomach diseases, including cancer and ulcers. Previously, stomach ulcers were attributed to increased stomach acid, but in the 1980s, the true culprit, Helicobacter pylori, was identified, unveiling its association with various gastric ailments, even cancer. Monitoring its density in the stomach and intestines is crucial for diagnosing and evaluating treatments.

Conducted by NEU Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süleyman Asır from NEU’s Biomedical Engineering Department, and experts from Hacettepe University, their research led to a biosensor’s development. This nanochip-based biosensor can directly identify Helicobacter pylori using molecular imprinting methods, earning NEU the patent.

The biosensor offers an efficient method to gauge Helicobacter pylori density, aiding both diagnosis and treatment monitoring. NEU Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel highlights the university’s commitment to translating academic research into tangible benefits for society through University 4.0’s vision. This approach transforms high-tech scientific studies into practical solutions, aiming to enhance human life.

Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ underscores NEU’s multidisciplinary collaborations across global institutions, highlighting the biosensor as a remarkable outcome of this strategy. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asır emphasizes the biosensor’s role in detecting the bacterium and quantifying its presence, proving instrumental in diagnosing diseases and monitoring treatment efficacy.

The patented biosensor signifies NEU’s prowess in innovation, melding academic expertise with R&D capability. This development not only marks a milestone but also signifies a significant leap towards introducing this biosensor to the market for practical applications in healthcare.
