Published in the esteemed South African Journal of Botany, the study explores the functional activity of essential oil extracted from Cyprus-grown rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) on liver cancer. Laboratory experiments showcased promising effects, indicating molecules within the rosemary oil might hold therapeutic promise for liver cancer treatment.
Led by a team including Prof. Dr. Seda Vatansever, Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer, Assist. Prof. Dr. Duygu Yiğit Hanoğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eda Becer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ergül Mutlu Altundağ, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Güran, and Selma Ustürk, this research marks the first of its kind on Cyprus-grown rosemary. The comprehensive study delves into the chemical composition and biological potential of the essential oil derived from this indigenous plant, widely utilized among the local population.
Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, Rector of Near East University, commended the multidisciplinary efforts of the researchers, highlighting their diverse expertise across various scientific domains. He underscored the significance of collaboration in achieving this breakthrough, particularly noting the contributions of Prof. Dr. Seda Vatansever in stem cell research, cancer mechanisms, and histological applications, as well as the vital work of Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer and Assist. Prof. Dr. Duygu Yiğit Hanoğlu in chemistry, botany, and pharmacy. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ expressed optimism, stating that the study’s findings reveal the potential of Cyprus rosemary essential oil as a hopeful avenue in combating liver cancer.
