Faculty members and students from Near East University Faculty of Arts and Sciences have transformed the outcomes of a literacy course, initiated in November 2022 for mothers in the Cyprus Turkish Child Protection Institution, into a scientific publication. The study, presented at the “International Cyprus Education and Social Sciences Symposium,” focused on the impact of mothers learning to read and write on their communication with children. Additionally, another study at the symposium addressed the earthquake experiences of pre-service teachers, emphasizing the need for increased disaster education in curricula.

Initiated at the request of the Cyprus Turkish Child Protection Institution, the literacy course aimed to observe how mothers’ literacy impacts their lives and the lives of their children. Findings revealed enhanced communication between mothers and their children, emphasizing the positive social impact of maternal literacy. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yeniasır, Head of the Turkish Language Teaching Department at Near East University, noted that the study observed the experiences of mothers and children during this process, emphasizing improved communication and eased daily lives.

Another study presented at the symposium explored the impact of an earthquake on pre-service teachers, including Ece Naz Sevim, a student at Near East University who experienced the earthquake in Iskenderun. The research indicated a shift in perspectives among future teachers, emphasizing the necessity of including content in education programs that contributes to informed responses to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes. The findings underscored the importance of increasing education and training in disaster management for enhanced social awareness. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Gökbulut highlighted the collective concern among teacher candidates for disaster education, advocating for its inclusion in curricula globally.
