The ‘Women’s Studies and Multidisciplinary Approaches Symposium’ Organized by TOCAM Brought Together Women from Various Professional Groups, Ranging from Politics to the Judiciary”

March 8 The International Women’s Day, symbolizing the historical struggle for gender equality in social, economic, and political spheres led by women throughout history, was celebrated through events organized by The Near East University. The day was marked with a full-day symposium titled “Women’s Studies and Multidisciplinary Approaches,” organized by the Gender Research and Application Center (TOCAM) of The Near East University, which brought together numerous women participants from politics, judiciary, and various professional fields.

Under the theme “Pushing Boundaries, Breaking Barriers,” the symposium addressed topics such as “Women in Health and Sports,” “Women in Law, Communication, and Society,” “Women in Arts,” and “Women’s Experiences in Daily Life.” The event witnessed a significant turnout, underscoring its relevance and resonance within the community.

During the opening speeches, notable figures including The Near East University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Meltem Nalça Andrieu, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Özay Günsel Children’s University Dr. Anna Günsel, Member of Parliament for the Republican Turkish Party Dr. Sıla Usar İncirli, Former Judge of the High Court and former Ombudsman Emine Dizdarlı, and TOCAM Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. İzlem Kanlı emphasized that March 8th is not just a day of celebration but also a day of women’s rights advocacy and solidarity.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanlı emphasized that the United Nations’ theme for the year, “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,” aligns perfectly with TOCAM’s mission. The center doesn’t just focus on academic research but also actively works to combat discrimination, harassment, and violence against women, while raising awareness within the community

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanlı also touched upon some of the initiatives undertaken by TOCAM, stating, “With our new projects, we aim to make a greater contribution to society and support women’s studies through national and international collaborations.” She emphasized that TOCAM adopts a multidisciplinary approach to women’s studies, serving as an intersection of various disciplines ranging from communication to law, medicine to art.
