“Memory of the Earth” Collection Brings Cyprus’s Lost Ceramic Heritage Home

The GÜNSEL Art Museum at Near East University has opened “Memory of the Earth from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages,” a unique collection created over 24 years by Turkish Cypriot researcher and artist Rauf Ersenal. Featuring ceramic works reproduced using original techniques, the collection traces Cyprus’s rich ceramic heritage from the Neolithic era to the Middle Ages. The exhibition highlights artifacts that were removed from the island during the British colonial period and are now housed in major international museums, including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. By bringing these historical works back to public view in Cyprus, the collection strengthens cultural memory and preserves the island’s artistic heritage for future generations.
