These ceramic pieces draw inspiration from figurines and sculptures used in ancient Cyprus during the archaic period, dating back up to 4,000 years. Selçuk Yalovalı, through his artistry, aims to harmoniously integrate the island’s historical culture with contemporary expressions.
Among the remarkable additions to the Sur City Museum is a ceramic piece inspired by an artifact from 1,450-1,200 BC, discovered in Nicosia’s Agia Paraskevi region. The artwork, an amorphous representation, features a bird-faced naked woman holding a baby, adorned with large hoop earrings and surrounded by Cyprus spikes in the background. Yalovalı faithfully incorporates motifs and geometric shapes from the original period into his creation.
Another piece in the collection draws inspiration from a cylinder seal unearthed in Nicosia’s Agia Paraskevi region, dating back to the 14th century BC. This seal depicts a seated figure, believed to be a god or goddess, surrounded by winged supernatural creatures or lions. Yalovalı’s reinterpretation maintains the integrity of the original figures, incorporating period-accurate geometric shapes and motifs.
A ceramic work symbolizing a bird catching fish is also a notable addition. Inspired by a vase dating back to 750-600 BC from the 1st Archaic period, Yalovalı’s composition includes a bird-catching fish figure, surrounded by fish motifs from the same era.
