The collaborative effort between Near East University and La Trobe University in the "Bacteriophage project" could be a game-changer in combating the growing global threat of antibiotic resistance. This project, addressing the urgent need for alternative treatments against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, particularly the “Pseudomonas aeruginosa” strains, aims to harness bacteriophages as a natural defense mechanism.
Led by Near East University's DESAM Research Center in collaboration with La Trobe University from Australia, the project focuses on understanding the resistance mechanism of bacteria and exploring bacteriophages' potential as a natural remedy. This collaborative effort has already garnered recognition, winning the Poster Presentation First Prize at the Antibiotic and Chemotherapy Association (ANKEM) Rational Antibiotic Use Congress.
Dr. Ferdiye Taner, spearheading the research, highlighted the significance of developing alternative treatments against bacteria with acquired antibiotic resistance. The project's goal involves isolating bacteriophages capable of degrading multi-drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, aiming to lay the groundwork for effective phage therapy formulations.
Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, Near East University Rector, stressed the importance of collaboration in scientific endeavors, citing the joint efforts between Near East University and La Trobe University as instrumental in tackling global health challenges.
