Racism, Discrimination, and Media Panel: Rethinking Discrimination Through the Lens of Media

A panel organized by the Faculty of Communication at Near East University, the issues of racism, discrimination, and their intersection with media were extensively discussed by academics and legal experts. The panel highlighted the exacerbation of discrimination due to unresolved national and international problems, emphasizing the role of media, particularly social media, in triggering discriminatory behaviors.

The opening speech of the event was delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Ayhan Dolunay, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Near East University. Dr. Dolunay highlighted the international successes of the university and emphasized the direct alignment of the panel with the university’s approach to ensuring equal opportunities in education and all fields, particularly in the context of UN development goals aimed at reducing inequalities.

Moderator Dr. İbrahim Özejder underscored the recent global regression in areas such as human rights, democracy, and respect for diversity. The panel addressed the pressing need to confront these challenges and promote a more inclusive and tolerant society.

During the panel, academics and legal experts discussed the relationships between racism, discrimination, and the media. The event, moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. İbrahim Özejder, featured speakers such as Lawyer Aslı Murat, Council Member of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, Prof. Dr. Barış Çoban, Head of the Department of Communication Sciences at Istanbul Doğuş University, and Prof. Dr. Nur Köprülü from Near East University. The panel highlighted how media, especially social media, triggers discriminatory behaviors. Attention was drawn to the global regression in areas such as human rights, democracy, and respect for diversity.
