- Introduction
1.1. Purpose and Scope
Near East University is committed to promoting a healthy and safe environment for all staff, students, and visitors. Acknowledging the impact of smoking on health, the university aims to minimize exposure to secondhand smoke on campus while respecting the needs of those who smoke. This policy outlines the guidelines for designated smoking areas and the use of e-cigarettes on campus.
1.2. Partial Smoke-Free Campus
Smoking is restricted to designated smoking areas strategically located throughout the campus. All indoor areas, including academic and administrative buildings, are completely smoke-free. This policy applies to all staff, students, visitors, and contractors.
1.3. Legislation and Compliance
This policy is in alignment with national and local legislation related to smoke-free environments (Internal Order of the Law on the Protection and Control of Harmful Tobacco Products of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). Non-compliance may result in penalties as prescribed by law and disciplinary action by the university.
1.4. Rights and Responsibilities
Members of the university community have a right to clean air in indoor areas and designated outdoor areas. Individuals who smoke are required to respect non-smoking areas and use the designated smoking areas provided.
1.5. E-cigarettes and Vaping
The use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices is permitted only in designated smoking areas.
- Implementation and Enforcement
2.1. Signage
Signage indicating designated smoking and smoke-free areas will be clearly displayed throughout the campus.
2.2. Reporting and Compliance
Violations of this policy can be reported to designated university authorities. The university is committed to addressing non-compliance through education, support, and enforcement as necessary.
2.3. Support for Smoking Cessation
The University offers smoking cessation programmes to help those who want to quit smoking. Near East University promotes a smoke-free lifestyle and provides resources and support to those who want to quit smoking at the Near East Hospital (IQS Centre).
2.4. Review of Policy
This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it meets the needs of the university community and complies with applicable laws. Proposed changes will be communicated for feedback before implementation.
