1. Purpose
This policy outlines Near East University’s commitment to environmental responsibility, climate action, and the advancement of sustainable development principles across all university operations, academic programs, and community outreach.

2. Commitment
As a higher education institution, Near East University recognizes its role in addressing the climate crisis. We are committed to:

  • Reducing our environmental impact through feasible and measurable actions.
  • Promoting sustainable lifestyles within our university community.
  • Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13: Climate Action.
  • Near East University is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions across its Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources by the year 2050. The university has designated 2025 as its baseline year, marking the beginning of consistent and verifiable greenhouse gas emissions tracking in alignment with international standards. Progress will be reviewed and reported annually as part of the university’s climate action efforts.

3. Focus Areas and Action Plans

Waste and Energy

  • Encourage waste reduction and recycling practices across all campuses.
  • Promote energy-saving behaviors and long-term infrastructure improvements.

Sustainable Transportation

  • Incentivize the use of public transportation by students and staff.
  • Support the introduction and safe use of electric scooters within campus grounds.
  • Integrate climate-friendly commuting into the university’s broader transport strategy.

Flexible Working and Carbon Footprint

  • Align flexible working policies with carbon emission reduction goals.
  • Monitor energy savings and commuting patterns in relation to remote work.

Green Campus and Biodiversity

  • Protect existing green areas and integrate native plant species in landscaping.
  • Consider sustainable practices in any future campus development.
  • In alignment with these goals, Near East University adopts apractical approach to mitigating the environmental impact of its operations. Key strategies include the promotion of renewable energy, energy-efficient infrastructure, water and resource conservation, sustainable transportation, and periodic assessment of its environmental footprint.

4. Education, Research, and SDG Integration

  • Develop undergraduate and postgraduate courses focusing on sustainability and climate change.
  • Promote interdisciplinary research addressing environmental challenges.
  • Support the establishment of research centers aligned with climate and sustainability priorities.
  • Integrate SDG awareness into the curriculum, student clubs, and institutional communication.

5. Governance and Monitoring

  • The implementation and periodic review of this policy will be overseen by the Sustainability Office.
  • Annual progress summaries will be shared with the university community to ensure transparency and accountability.
